Meet the Team

Gillian Patch Principal Solicitor

Gillian is a specialist employment solicitor with extensive experience advising both employers and employees. She founded Patch Law in 2012 after working both in private practice and for the Manufacturers’ Organisation EEF, where she provided advice to a broad range of businesses from SMEs to blue chip companies.

Clients appreciate her understanding of the wider business context which is enhanced through her broad legal background. Gillian’s experience includes commercial law, commercial dispute resolution and civil litigation.

Prior to becoming a solicitor, Gillian ran a busy commercial department within a university, with responsibility for employed staff, freelancers and volunteers. She understands, from direct experience, the employer’s perspective and the need to focus on commercial solutions.

Gillian is passionate about achieving the best outcomes for her clients, and for making the process as comfortable as possible. Clients value her clear and down-to-earth style and her focus on achieving positive results. She also holds an MBA with Distinction and is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association. Outside of work she unwinds by singing with a choir and going for walks with her fun-loving labradoodle.

Simon Martin Consultant Solicitor

Simon brings nearly 20 years’ experience to his work with Patch Law.

Simon has been a specialist employment lawyer for over 20 years. He has broad and varied experience acting for both employers and employees. He trained in the City of London and has advised numerous household name clients.

Highly regarded for his robust and tactical approach, clients value his “real world” advice, calm and reassuring style as well as his absence of fence sitting. Simon has experience as a board member as well as advising numerous directors and boards.  He has particular interest in supporting large and small commercial clients closely with change projects, TUPE and dispute hearings. He is equally comfortable providing practical and timely advice to employee clients. He uses his knowledge of how companies approach employment law situations and in doing so has achieved many excellent results for his clients.

When not at work, Simon is kept occupied by his four children (including twin five-year-olds) and his ageing dog. He is also a keen fan of professional cycling and doesn’t do quite as much actual cycling himself as he really ought to, he is currently contemplating investing in an e-bike.

Alexandra Weston Legal Assistant

Alex joined Patch Law in the Autumn of 2019 after following the traditional academic route into launching her legal career, beginning with a law degree at the University of the West of England followed by the Legal Practice Course combined with a Master’s degree at BPP Law School.

Choosing the employment law option throughout each stage of her higher education, she is rapidly gaining further knowledge in this area in the course of her work with Patch Law. Alex is often our first friendly point of contact on the telephone for new clients, guiding them towards the most suitable service, and arranging appointments, as well as taking initial details and case information, so as to maximise the benefit of the consultation time when the client is advised by one of our solicitors.

Alex decided to remain in her home town of Bristol throughout her studies, but still enjoys a beach holiday overseas with Miami and Las Vegas as her current favourite destinations.

Gemma Spencer Practice Manager

Gemma began working for Patch Law in March 2017 after returning to work from becoming a first time mum.

Prior to that, her experience has included a similar position at another local employment law firm and roles in administration and management for equestrian charities. Gemma’s can-do attitude means she happily turns her hand to all aspects of management of the practice, together with a friendly and high level of customer service. In her spare time Gemma enjoys taking her daughter swimming and to soft play, the outdoors, Bake-Off and a rare meal out with her husband.

Some of our Google reviews

review rating 5  Very easy to deal with, efficient in returning calls and emails. Were very professional and helped me to understand the implications of the settlement agreement I was signing in plain English.

review rating 5  I engaged Patch Law upon the recommendation of a friend and am so glad I did! I found Gillian an absolute pleasure to work with; warm and approachable whilst being extremely knowledgeable and strategic in employment matters. Gillian’s advice and support helped me to navigate my way through a difficult situation I faced at work on returning from maternity leave to a very satisfactory end. Gillian is certainly someone you want on your side of the battlefield and I couldn’t recommend her highly enough.
